erasures diasporas is a series of visual imprints that explores the loss, acquisition, and migration of languages (and also dialects, créoles, pidgins, vernaculars, utterances, articulations, syllabics, vocal codes) through the african diaspora.
the imprints were made using old letraset. the letters had long ago been rubbed off, and the plastic sheets had become rippled and textured. ink and/or acrylic paint was spread over them. they were then laid onto large sheets of paper and pressed/rolled using a glass guitar slide.
erasures diasporas - one imprint was published as a limited edition leaflet by no press, august 2013. an excerpt from this series was published in the literary journal yellow field, issue 9, buffalo ny, 2014, and another in matrix magazine, winter 2015, issue 100.
each imprint emerges from nothingness into noise, and, as im)migrants and people of color do daily, balances presence with negative space.
